To test this myth, the MythBusters team bought various second-hand appliances and set up a grounded bathtub in a controlled environment. Since no volunteer was available, they used a dummy equipped with a current sensor. In the first test, a hairdryer shut off automatically when dropped into the water and posed no danger. However, a small fan generated a current of 58.5 milliamps—near the fatal threshold. A toaster doubled that with 100 milliamps, making it deadly. A curling iron produced 44.5 milliamps, enough to cause severe muscle spasms. The most striking result came from an electric iron, which delivered 300 milliamps of current. In conclusion, while not every device is dangerous, some can definitely be lethal.
