Union Minister Nitin Gadkari highlighted that India imports 87% of its energy, costing around Rs 22 lakh crores. He said using maize for ethanol fuel can save this amount and benefit farmers. When ethanol talks began, maize prices rose from Rs 1200-1800 per quintal to Rs 2600-2800, boosting cultivation in UP and Bihar threefold. Gadkari noted that ethanol-fuelled vehicles will reduce pollution, be cost-effective, and indigenous. He added that maize farmers could gain Rs 40,000 crores in profit while India saves on energy imports, making the initiative a win-win for both the economy and agriculture.
