The Sandhills of North Carolina are known primarily for PGA golf, military bases, potteries, and farms. But there is also a great nature preserve just outside of Southern Pines in Moore County, North Carolina. This is the Wymouth Woods-Sandhills Nature Preserve. This preserve protects and manages a Long Leaf Pine forest typical of the Sandhills region. In this video, I explored the main preserve property as well as the Boyd Tract, a separate property nearby that is also part of the Preserve. Some of the trees in the preserve are 450+ years old, including one tree that is believed to be the oldest known Long Leaf Pine. The terrain in the area is gently rolling hills and long flat valleys, making for very easy and enjoyable strolls along the various hiking and equestrian trails found criss-crossing the preserve.
