The song was created when Aoife Duignan inspired me to write her an original song. At the time we were classmates at the Trad Music course in Drumshanbo, Co. Leitrim. Knowing of Aoife’s great love and respect for the traditions of her homeplace (Aoife’s Dad, Dominic worked as a Miner in Arigna Mines), I wrote Arigna as an homage to the great tradition of coal mining in the area, as well as Aoife’s pride in her homeplace.

Aoife Duignan is a 21-year-old Irish singer and musician. The daughter of a coal-miner, her debut single 'Arigna' is about the lives of the miners who worked in the mines and lived in her hometown.

Arigna goes live on all streams on Saturday 2nd March 2024 and the Video and Single will be officially launched at the Arigna Mining Experience on Sunday 24th March 2024 the local poet, playwright and broadcaster Vincent Woods.

Lyrics:

I’ll sing you a song, if you come by the hills
Where the black seam was found and they worked it until
It was all stripped away, it stands silent today
Only ghosts keeping watch on it still

Or I’ll play you tune, a jig or a reel
John McKenna composed, it will give you the feel
Of the life and the times, when they worked in the mines
Long before I was part of the deal

This is my place; this is my home
Its my own space, but I’m never alone
Wherever life takes me, I go with the flow
But Arigna comes with me, I know

So, climb up the hill and look over the land
The fields and the lakes, laid out as God planned
With Leitrim, Roscommon and Sligo below
It’s the closest to heaven I know

The mountain remains, it will prosper again
The future is bright I’m sure
The memories last and we are proud of our past
But we’ll trouble the black seam no more

This is my place, this is my place
The closest to heaven I know
