Cyber Monday is now one of the largest online shopping days of the year. Yet it started as a marketing term for the Monday after Thanksgiving. Ellen Davis, of the National Retail Foundation along with Scott Silverman, of Shop.org, coined this term. They release a press release announcing that Cyber Monday was becoming one of the most famous shopping days of the year for online sales. It was a clever ploy to encourage consumers to shop online.

Since the Cyber Monday term came about, a trend has driven retailers to offer deep discounts and promotions on this “after Thanksgiving Monday.” In 2017 online sales reached an incredible $6.59 billion. Cyber Monday has quickly become the online equivalent to Black Friday.
