Originally built in 1769 as a single storey arcaded market house, the Exchange was raised in 1776 to include Assembly Rooms. The building was at the centre of commerce and culture until the erection of the Commercial Buildings opposite in 1822. The property was considerably remodelled for the Belfast Banking Company; externally in the Italian Renaissance palazzo style by Charles Lanyon and internally by W H Lynn. The B1 listed building continued to be used as a bank until 2000 but is now unoccupied and has been entered into the Built Heritage at Risk register .
