10 Biggest Catches Of All Time
You must have heard of the saying, ‘there is always a bigger fish’, which often refers to
the idea that there is something or someone who is relatively superior. The literal
interpretation of this phrase, on the other hand, means that however big a fish you think
you might have caught, there is one that is much bigger in the ocean. This statement is
backed by the fact that out of the 8.7 million species of animals on Earth, 2.1 million are
marine animals; and to date, more than 80% of the ocean is yet to be explored.
Therefore, there is a high possibility that there is a bigger fish somewhere out there than
has been discovered. Over the years people have found pride in catching the largest
fish they possibly can. Many people have achieved massive catches, while either
engaging in fishing activities as a hobby or for commercial purposes.
Number 10: Largest Lobster Ever Caught
While the near 20 kg or 44 pounds 6 ounces lobster that was caught off the coast of
Nova Scotia, Canada, in 1977, is the largest officially recorded lobster according to the
Guinness Book of World Records, there was a massive unofficial one caught back in
1926. The only solid evidence of this hefty 23.4 kg or 51.5 pound lobster caught in
Maine, USA is a picture of it. The gigantic arthropod had a length of 83.8 cm or 33
inches and claws that measured up to 128.2 cm or 50.5 inches. Unfortunately, the
lobster got smashed after being mounted when it was being transported to Charles Q.
Eldridge’s private museum in Mystic, Connecticut. Since the picture was the only
evidence of the largest lobster to ever been caught, it never received official recognition.
Moreover, scientists determine a lobster’s age from its size, which would mean that this
lobster may have been more than 100 years old.
Number 9: Largest Catfish Ever Caught
The Mekong giant catfish caught in Thailand in 2005 is the world’s largest freshwater
fish, weighing a staggering 293 kg or 646 pounds. The 2.7 meters or 8.9 foot long catch
is also the heaviest recorded fish since Thailand started keeping records. The villagers
wanted to sell the fish to environmental groups, who were supposed to release it to
spawn upriver. However, despite great efforts, the villagers were unable to keep the fish
alive. It was then cut up into pieces and sold to villagers to be eaten. This species of
catfish is among one of the most endangered species in the world. The main cause of
this is dam construction and habitat degradation along the Mekong Lake, where the
species is endemic. Even though very little is known about the ecology of this species,
efforts are being made to preserve the fish as part of the Mekong Fish Conservation
Project.
Number 8: Largest Stingray Ever Caught
Stingrays are wide, flat-bodied fish that are well reputed for being friendly marine
animals, despite being related to the fearsome sharks. Although they are commonly
found in shallow coastal waters, partially buried beneath the sand, the largest one ever
caught was found in Thailand’s Mae Klong River in 2015. The massive fish had a length
of 4.26 meters or 14 feet and measured 2.4 meters or 7.9 feet across, which is almost
the size of a big car. It is a contender for the largest freshwater fish ever documented by
researchers. The fish had an estimated weight of 317.5 to 3.62 kg or 700 to 800
pounds. The exact weight could not be known, as it is difficult to weigh these massive
animals without hurting them. An ultrasound was performed, where the female was
found to be pregnant with two fetal rays. The ray had a few bite marks on it when it was
caught and was kept in a safe cage in the river before being released unscathed.
According to its size, the animal was 35 to 40 years old, but had the potential to keep
growing as long as it lived long enough and had enough food.
Number 7: Largest Salmon Ever Caught
Salmon is a notoriously common fish and is a favorite item of seafood cuisine that you
must have seen on the menu, if you have ever been to a seafood restaurant. Although
they commonly weigh between 9 to 13.6 kg or 20 and 30 pounds, the size and weight of
salmon mostly depend on their species. While the Pink Salmon are the smallest ones in
terms of both size and weight, King Salmon are the largest species with an average size
ranging from 10 to 11.4 kg or 22 to 25 pounds. The largest King Salmon, or Chinook
Salmon as they are also known as, was caught in a fish trap near Petersburg, Alaska in
1949. The behemoth had an astonishing weight of 57 kg or 126 pounds and measured
a little over a meter in length, or up to 4 feet 10 inches long.
