Tapash Kumar Ganguly, born on December 24, 1951, has a rich legacy deeply rooted in the Lucknow Gharana of tabla. As the son of Pt. Hirendra Kumar Ganguly and Nilima Ganguly, and the grandson of Lt. Manmatha Nath Ganguly—himself a disciple of Ustad Babu Khan and later Nagendra Nath Bose of the Lucknow Gharana. Tapash grew up surrounded by music. His family lineage was instrumental in promoting the Lucknow style of tabla in Kolkata, a tradition Tapash passionately embraced.

He pursued an academic career as well, serving as a full-time lecturer in history at Bijaygar Jyotish Ray College in Jadavpur, Kolkata, from January 9, 1984, until his retirement as an Associate Professor on December 31, 2011. During his tenure, he also worked as an examiner for the Higher Secondary Examinations, B.A. General, and SSC.

Under the guidance of his father and later Pt. Santosh Krishna Biswas—a disciple of both Hirendra and Manmatha Nath Ganguly—Tapash honed his tabla skills. He showcased his talent in various performances, including solo renditions at his grandfather’s death anniversary in 1972, 1981, and 1987. He performed solo in soirees from 1972 and collaborated with his father in the Shibpur Conference in 1985, accompanying eminent artists like Lt. Soumitra Lahiri (Sitar) and Dr. Bhupendra Nath Shil. Between 1989 and 1991, he accompanied musicians like Pt. Shyamal Chatterjee, Pt. Amalendu Chowdhury, and the renowned violinist Smt. Sisir-Kana Dhar Chowdhury, continuing to uphold his family’s musical legacy.
