The eight crew members and rescue workers aboard a Russian firefighting plane died in a hilly location in southern Turkey on Saturday, according to Russia's defence ministry.
The amphibious Beriev Be-200 crashed while attempting to land in Turkey's Adana province, according to the government. Five Russians and three Turkish citizens were on board. According to Turkish official media, a team has been despatched to the Kahramanmaras area to examine the accident.
Mevlüt avuşolu, Turkey's foreign minister, expressed his sadness at the deaths and promised that their heroic sacrifices will not be forgotten.
In the last 16 days, Turkey has battled 300 or more flames, which have killed eight people, destroyed woods and homes, and forced hundreds to escape.
The governor of Kahramanmaras, Omer Faruk Coskun, told Anadolu news agency that a wildfire had started when lightning damaged trees.
We sent a jet to the region, but we lost contact with it a while ago, and it crashed, he said. This is a brand-new circumstance. We sent a large number of units to the crash site, he said.
The Be-200 is a two-engined amphibious aircraft used to battle forest fires in Russia and other countries. During a single mission, it can drop up to 270 metric tonnes of water in many runs.
Wildfires in Turkey's Mediterranean area erupted in late July, destroying thousands of acres of forest, especially in the seaside districts of Mugla and Antalya. The fires broke out after a lengthy heat wave in Turkey and the Mediterranean.
Climate experts believe that climate change caused by the combustion of coal, oil, and natural gas is to blame for increasing extreme events including heat waves, droughts, wildfires, floods, and storms.
Flash floods devastated northern Turkey this week, killing at least 44 people and turning streets into roaring torrents.
