Ep. 126 THE FIVE YEAR MOSAIC FLORAL, An Eye for the Smalti Owl Mosaic and a Bit on the Gray Mirror!

I decide to finish the flowers on the mosaic bouquet for my sister. I work on it once in a while, so it is going to take me five years at this rate. I pull a bit of glass from my scrap bins in yellow and white. Choosing the colors carefully is crucial. I discard the mottled glass as the petals are very creamy and smooth. My studio is too crowded to accommodate the Five Year Bouquet, so I am cutting in my studio and transporting to my kitchen to glue! A bit of a process, but doable.
2:02 I begin with the "white-ish" pods, using a very pale green stained glass to make them. Bits of petal showing are added with white and pale yellow. I use my wheeled nippers to shape the glass pieces on my template and then load them onto a board to transport to the actual substrate. Gluing the glass with Weldbond goes pretty quickly using this method!
5:03 Next, I start in on the white flowers with a yellow center. At this point, the pale yellow just isn't working well. Fortunately, I flip the glass over and the other side is much brighter and looks so much better!
5:55 UG! The pods are disappearing because they are so pale! I have to spritz the pieces with water and pry them off. They come up surprisingly easy! Then I replace them with a green that is a bit darker but in the same family. Now they read better and have some depth to them. While so much of this project was mapped out a long time ago, adjustments are needed along the way to make a stronger composition.
6:50 Time to give the smalti owl his other eye. The eyes are just a bit different. I am using black tinted Laticrete 254 thinset as the adhesive.
8:17 I can't wait for my tiles to come in any longer! I want to drop off the mirrors in a shop in two weeks, so I need to make progress while I wait. I can add the outside border and then one more row of cut tiles to the inside border. My tiles have shipped so they should be here soon!
