A former Durango School District teacher has pleaded guilty to sexual abuse charges involving at least 37 victims. Benjamin Smith previously taught music classes at Escalante Middle School. Smith pleaded guilty to felony counts of production of sexually explicit images of children, coercion and enticement of minors, and attempted coercion and enticement of minors.

He will face up to 40 years in prison. Between October 2022 and July 2024, Smith allegedly inappropriately contacted at least 37 children. Prosecutors accused him of enticing 36 victims to produce visual depictions of their bodies or engage in sexual activity.

Smith carried out an "elaborate ruse" by posing as a 16-year-old girl on Snapchat and contacting boys under 18. Smith would send fake nude images and convince the victims to send images of themselves.

Then, he would arrange to meet the victims before disguising himself with a wig and painted nails. When Smith met the victims, he hid underneath a sheet with a hole cut into it. The victims believed they were meeting a 16-year-old girl. Prosecutors said Smith performed oral sex on the victims and secretly recorded audio of the encounters.

Smith was busted when one of the victims recognized a man under the sheet. Smith closed the door and fled, but the victim memorized a portion of his license plate leading to his arrest. Smith was arrested while teaching a music class at a church. #News #Crime #CO #Durango
