A large deployment of federal agents (over 100) from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has been sent to Coast Guard Base Alameda (in the East Bay, between Alameda & Oakland) to serve as a staging-area for possible enforcement operations.

These actions are being framed by the federal government as part of a broader immigration enforcement surge in “sanctuary cities” and urban areas. Local officials see this as politically charged.

Protests have erupted. On Oct 23 2025 morning, crowds blocked access to the base, clashing with agents; there are reports of at least two people injured and use of flash-bang or stun devices.

Local leaders in Oakland and San Francisco are warning residents about the possibility of increased immigration enforcement, and are also emphasizing knowing one’s rights.

While a full-scale military or National Guard deployment was signalled by the federal side, an announced “surge” into San Francisco has been paused or cancelled for now.

Not strictly about Oakland, but a related note: In September, there were local ICE arrests in East Oakland at a home (6 people including a minor) and at a courthouse — showing enforcement is already happening in the broader Alameda County/Oakland region.

It’s not just ICE but agents from CBP (and potentially other DHS components) who are being posted locally.

Protests and public disruptions are ongoing; access to/from certain facilities near the base may be impacted.

You do not have to let agents into your home unless they have a judicial warrant (signed by a judge) that lists your name and address.

You have the right to remain silent; you don’t have to answer questions about your immigration status.
