An annual Water-releasing Festival has made a splash in Dujiangyan City, southwest China's Sichuan Province, to commemorate the designer of an ancient dam that still remains in operation today.

The opening ceremony on Sunday included offering sacrifices, praying and water discharges to the downstream.

The historic festival dates back 1,000 years and commemorates Li Bing, who designed the Dujiangyan irrigation system back in 256 BC, and also allows people to pay respect to nature.

The irrigation system has given the flood-plagued people along the banks of Minjiang River a peaceful and affluent lifestyle.

Minjiang River irrigates nearly 70,000 hectares of farmland in Sichuan and has won the province the reputation of "the land of abundance".

Located some 50 kilometers from the provincial capital Chengdu, the Dujiangyan scheme, which was built more than 2,250 years ago, is said to be the world's oldest irrigation project still in operation.

In 2000, Dujiangyan was included on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
