Hi, it’s Chels here again. Earlier today, I was at the pond, browsing through the photos on my iPad, and I was reminded of the rich diversity of life that thrives there. Among the lush greenery, I captured images of vibrant water lilies, nimble dragonflies, lively frogs, and even a secretive snake!

This pond serves as a vivid illustration of an ecosystem. An ecosystem encompasses all living organisms, including animals and plants, in a specific area, alongside the nonliving components of the environment they engage with, such as water, soil, and climate.

One intriguing aspect of ecosystems is the food chain, a system that demonstrates the interconnection of organisms based on their feeding habits. Let’s explore a typical food chain emanating from the pond’s ecosystem.

Our food chain initiates with the Sun, the core energy source enabling plants like grasses and reeds to flourish. These plants, through photosynthesis, convert the sun’s radiant energy into nourishment.

In the following stage, insects like grasshoppers feast on these plants, deriving energy necessary for their survival and growth. However, they must tread carefully, for lurking nearby are frogs, ever watchful and ready to pounce on their next meal.

Completing this food chain is a stork, gracefully foraging along the pond’s shore and seizing the opportunity to snatch a frog for dinner.

Sun → Reeds & Grasses → Grasshopper → Frog → Stork
