Carl Lewis, one of the greatest track and field athletes of all time, achieved nine Olympic gold medals and eight World Championship gold medals.

Lewis was born in 1961 in Alabama into a family of athletes. His mom, who was heavily involved in track and field, started an athletics club and lead Lewis to his path of success. Before he turned 20, he jumped to 8.52 meters and for the first time, topped the world rankings in the long jump and in the 100 meters. In his first Olympic Games, in 1984, he was the first to win 4 gold medals in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 meters relay, as well as the long jump, since Jesse Owens in 1936.

In 1991, he competed in the World Championships in Tokyo and at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, where he won two more gold medals. Four years later, he won another gold in the long jump at the Atlanta Olympics. It was his ninth Olympic gold medal in track and field — a record that remains unbroken.
