The 'Lost Loop' and Mess John's (The Minister's) Ford - River Garnock, Kilwinning / Irvine

Описание к видео The 'Lost Loop' and Mess John's (The Minister's) Ford - River Garnock, Kilwinning / Irvine

The Minster's ford and stepping stones once crossed the Garnock at the Dirrans near Kilwinning and until the late 19th century the river itself flowed along a long loop down through Bartonholm that was cut off by a canal - probably dug for the Earl of Eglinton. It was called 'Mess John' and that term is a jocular, but derogatory term, for a Presbyterian minister in the late 17th century, especially one that was appointed by the feudal superior. The term 'Mess' derives from 'The mass' that would have then been an insult to a Presbyterian minister.
