From Manhattan Concrete to a Hidden Native American Trail | 18 Miles of Isolation, Panic & Payoff

What starts in the middle of Manhattan—where there are very few running trails—turns into one of the most unexpected and rewarding running adventures I’ve ever had.

This is the full journey from Manhattan to Riverhead, Long Island, using the subway plus three separate trains, just to reach the Paumanok Trail—an ancient Native American trail (Paumanok is the original Native name for Long Island).

Once on the trail, everything changes.

For 18 miles, I run in complete isolation through forests and sandy turf, the ground carpeted with leaves so soft it feels like a natural foot massage. At one point I even fall—no pain at all—because the trail absorbs everything. This is trail running at its best.

But the adventure doesn’t end there.

After hours alone in the woods, I reach Manorville with one critical goal: catch the Hampton Jitney back home. The pickup point? A dead-end road. No bus. No people. Just panic, cold (about 40–44°F), and the growing fear that I missed it.

Was the ticket wrong? Was I in the wrong place? Was I stranded?

Then—finally—the bus appears.

Two hours later, I’m dropped four blocks from home, safe, exhausted, and completely satisfied.

This was a long, complicated day—but absolutely worth it. If you love:
