Jack Reeves, MD, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, New York, NY, discusses the relationship between paramagnetic rim lesions (PRLs) and long-term disability progression in multiple sclerosis (MS) patients. While prior studies indicated that PRLs were linked to increased disability at a single point or over short durations (2-3 years), this research aimed to assess the association of PRLs with disability progression over extended periods, such as five to fifteen years. The findings revealed that the presence, and notably the quantity, of PRLs at baseline correlated with more significant rates of change in the expanded disability scale score, confirming prevailing beliefs about PRLs' role as markers of chronic disease activity. This detailed analysis is vital for understanding the long-term implications of PRLs on MS progression. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2023 in Milan, Italy.
