Florida soil is far from perfect, so I decided to try my hand at straw bale gardening this growing season.

A straw bale garden gives you more control over the environment in which your plants grow. As a result, you have fewer pests, less disease, less bending and less watering, among other benefits. Straw bale gardening enthusiasts tell me of beautiful tomatoes, herbs and many other fruits, vegetables and even root crops.

I've begun conditioning the straw bales which has to be done prior to planting; I'm on day seven of this process. I prefer organic gardening so prepping the bales takes a few days longer than the conventional way and does cost a bit more but it's the right choice for my family.

I'm very excited to start my vegetable garden this spring and experimenting with straw bale gardening.
