Can Antioxidants Improve my Immune System?
The immune system heavily relies on cell-to-cell communications for proper functioning and stability. If there’s any damage to this signaling process, it could severely impair your immune system’s response which means it won’t be as effective and efficient as it should be. Antioxidants can eliminate any overproduction of free radicals and neutralize them, and this, in turn, allows the immune system to work correctly and efficiently. A couple of studies were conducted to verify this. They all found strong evidence of this as the participants who took dietary antioxidants found a significant increase in the effectiveness of their immune system compared to those who didn’t take the nutritional antioxidants.

How Do Antioxidants Work?
In day-to-day life, our body’s internal processes and external factors such as pollution, smoke, ultraviolet rays, among others, lead to the production of free radicals. These free radicals are responsible for many diseases and damage the membranes, cell structures, enzymes, DNA, and immune system. On top of that, the immune system is more vulnerable to free radicals than anything else. This is where antioxidants come in. Antioxidants are produced by our body to eliminate and neutralize free radicals. This will safeguard vital organs and functions of our body, but sometimes they are not enough, especially for those who live in a heavily polluted environment. Hence the need for eating foods rich in antioxidants is that much important.

Are All Antioxidants the Same?
For a direct answer, no. While all antioxidants will fight against free radicals but some are more capable than others. Let’s take the example of race. Do you ever see all the cars driving parallelly in a race? No, they have different vehicles. Some cars drive way faster but are not that good at handling, while other cars are good at handling but slower in speed. The same principle follows here. Some antioxidants are naturally good at eliminating free radicals but very slow at any other task, while some are the complete opposite. Just 1 or 2 groups of antioxidants are not enough, and that’s why we recommend at least 5 to 7 different types of antioxidants in your diet.
