The Shivalokaa Thyagar Temple, also famously known as Aachaalpuram Sivan Koil, stands as a beacon of spiritual awakening and divine miracles. Dedicated to the suyambhu (self-manifested) murti of Lord Shiva, this temple is not only a place of worship but also a repository of legends, philosophical insights, and miraculous occurrences that have been handed down through generations. The temple holds a special place in the annals of Saivism—a faith that emphasizes the ultimate truth of merging with the divine. In this article, we explore the rich history, symbolic narratives, and spiritual benefits associated with the temple, drawing inspiration from its legendary connection with Saint TirugnanaSaambaandhar, one of the 63 revered Nayanars.
Life of TirugnanaSaambaandhar.
At the heart of the temple’s storied past lies the illustrious tale of TirugnanaSaambaandhar, a prodigious saint whose life epitomized unwavering devotion to Lord Shiva. His journey, marked by divine interventions and miraculous acts, is central to the temple’s mythology. The legend unfolds with profound symbolism, teaching devotees that the ultimate purpose of human existence is to surrender oneself completely to the divine—represented by the sacred lotus feet of Lord Shiva.
Matrimony and Miracles
According to temple lore, the narrative begins with Father Shivapaadaa Hrudayar, who sought to secure a matrimonial alliance for his son, TirugnanaSaambaandhar. Although the young saint initially resisted the idea of marriage, he eventually consented, recognizing it as the divine will of Lord Shiva. The matrimonial arrangements, however, took an unexpected turn:
The First Bride, Poompavai:
Chosen by Shivapaadaa Hrudayar from the lineage of Sivanesan Chettiar, Poompavai was a paragon of beauty and grace. Tragically, fate intervened when she succumbed to a snake bite. Yet, in a stunning display of divine power, TirugnanaSaambaandhar, with the benevolence of Lord Shiva, restored her to life. This miracle was not just an act of resurrection but also a symbolic gesture of the eternal cycle of creation, preservation, and dissolution—a core tenet of Saivism. In the ensuing compassion and reverence, Saambandhar accepted Poompavai as his daughter, underscoring the importance of unconditional love and sacrifice in the pursuit of spiritual enlightenment.
Following the miraculous restoration of Poompavai, Shivapaadaa Hrudayar chose Mangai Nallal, the daughter of Nambiandar Nambi of Nallur, as the bride. The wedding, which took place in Aachaalpuram, was conducted with enormous pomp and reverence by Tiruneelanakka Nayanar, another esteemed devotee. The ceremony was not merely a social contract but an elaborate ritual suffused with deep spiritual symbolism.
During the wedding, an extraordinary event unfolded. As TirugnanaSaambaandhar, along with his bride, circumambulated the sacred wedding fire pit, he offered heartfelt prayers to Lord Shiva. In his supplication, he sought divine protection against the trials and tribulations of marital life—a plea that resonated with all those who experience the challenges of human relationships. It was moment that Sambaandhar composed and intoned the Kallur Perumanam hymn, a glorious eulogy to the divine that reverberated through the gathering.
In response to the saint’s profound devotion, Lord Shiva appeared in the form of a radiant Jyothi (divine light). This luminous manifestation served as a divine command, urging Sambandhar and all present to merge with the Lord. Overwhelmed by the transcendent experience, the saint composed his final Pathigam (a set of 10 verses), extolling the virtues of the sacred Panchakshara Mantra—"Na" Ma Shi Va Ya." In that moment, as his soul merged with the divine light, all gathered devotees experienced a state of collective spiritual ecstasy—a powerful testament to the transformative effects of pure devotion.
