Prime Minister Narendra Modi made a pitch for India to play a leading role in the artificial intelligence boom at a conference featuring tech stars from around the world, despite some hitches and logistical issues.

Modi positioned India as the tech leader of the Global South, with a model of AI development that sits between the corporate-led ecosystem of the US and state-backed China push, and gathered support from leaders like UN Secretary-General António Guterres and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The conference highlighted India's constraints in the global AI race, including a lack of high-end computing infrastructure, but also showcased the country's deep expertise in IT services and its potential for population-scale deployment of AI in sectors like agriculture, education, and health.
