Petaling Street is Kuala Lumpur’s world-famous Chinatown. It is the older part of KL, similar to Bukit Bintang, where the hustling and bustling never ends. The “Green Dragon,” a huge transparent green roof cover that spans the entire road, was built in 2003. The street is now completely pedestrianized and has been converted into a pedestrian shopping venue. The street is designated as a heritage site in Malaysia.
History of Petaling Street, Chinatown Kuala Lumpur:-
Market Square and Jalan Tun H.S. Lee are the focal points of the original Chinatown (or High Street). Because it was higher than the rest of the town and hence less likely to flood, the High Street was well-liked. This prompted the area's richer residents to construct their shophouses. As a result, the elaborate shophouses were constructed farther from the High Street commercial district, north of Jalan Cheng Lock.
Around the turn of the twentieth century, Kuala Lumpur was a typical "pioneer" town. The majority of the population was male, and they were typical of the rough and tough pioneers of the time. The men were mostly Cantonese and Hakkas who had come to the city to work as coolies in the mines because of the tin trade. A Chinese Kapitan, or headman, ruled over them. Yap Ah Loy, a Hakka, was the most well-known Chinese Kapitan.
The Selangor Civil War broke out between opposing Malay groups and the Chinese community that supported them in the 1860s and 1870s. The Hokkien Ghee Hin and the Hakka Hai San secret societies were divided among the Chinese society along political grounds. The British government made the decision to engage in the conflict after realizing how the conflict affected their supply networks and economy. Many structures were demolished or seriously damaged as a result.
