The race at Silverstone revolved around three key strategic shifts: switching from slicks to intermediates, reverting back to slicks, and selecting the optimal compound during these transitions. Let's dissect the various stages of the race, focusing on tire degradation and the pace of the leading teams.

Despite an unexpected rain shower about forty-five minutes before the start, the race commenced on a dry track, with all teams opting for slick tires. The medium compound was the most popular choice, except for Esteban Ocon and Zhou, who went with the soft, and Sergio Perez, who chose the hard. Although Pirelli recommended the soft as the best starting tire for a dry race, the potential for rain likely influenced teams to select a more durable option to accommodate a possible later pit stop.

In the initial stint of the 2024 Formula 1 British Grand Prix at the 5.891-kilometre Silverstone Circuit, top drivers, including those from Ferrari, pushed their Pirelli tires to the limit before the rain hit. According to telemetry data, drivers improved their lap times progressively, correlating with the decreasing fuel loads.

Mercedes initially led the pace but struggled with lower downforce compared to McLaren when the rain began. This allowed Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri to recover from imperfect starts, with Norris maintaining a pace 0.2 seconds faster than Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen.

Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc struggled with race pace early on, running slower than the frontrunners. However, as the weather changed, Sainz managed to extract better performance from his SF-24, closing the gap with the leaders. Sainz finished the stint on par with the top drivers' pace. Meanwhile, Leclerc, despite a strong start, was stuck behind Lance Stroll for 15 laps, hindering his progress.
