In the late 1980s, the video game industry was flourishing with innovative ideas and technological advancements. Amid this golden era, a unique game called Spiderdroid emerged for the Atari 2600 console. Released in 1987 by Froggo Games Corporation, Spiderdroid was a futuristic reimagining of the arcade classic Amidar, which itself was a maze game developed by Konami. Amidar was known for its unique gameplay that combined elements of Pac-Man with a drawing mechanic, and Spiderdroid took this concept into the realm of science fiction.
Scenario
Set in a distant future where droids are the primary combatants in wars, Spiderdroid places the player in control of a titular Spiderdroid tasked with capturing buildings. The game's narrative revolves around the strategic importance of these structures, which are covered in an unbreakable material known as Droidweb. The player's objective is to navigate the Spiderdroid along the girders of each building, laying down strands of web to encase the structure fully. However, the buildings are not undefended; they swarm with hostile Birddroids intent on stopping the player's progress. As the levels advance, the player encounters new enemies like Skeledroids, adding to the game's challenge and depth.
How to Play?
The gameplay of Spiderdroid is both engaging and challenging. The player controls the Spiderdroid using the Atari 2600 joystick, moving it along the girders of various buildings. As the Spiderdroid moves, it leaves behind a trail of web. Completing a circuit around any opening causes the Spiderdroid to cast a web over it, capturing that section of the building. The ultimate goal is to cover the entire structure with the Droidweb. Players must be wary of the Birddroids, which patrol the girders and will end the Spiderdroid's mission upon contact. To defend against these aerial adversaries, the player can use a limited number of magic spells by pressing the joystick button, rendering the Birddroids invisible and harmless for a brief period. Strategic use of these spells is crucial, as the player only has a few per level. As the game progresses, the difficulty increases with the introduction of more aggressive enemies and complex building layouts. Success requires quick reflexes, strategic planning, and a keen eye for the patterns of enemy movement.
