When Berengarius of Tours denied that Christ was bodily present in the consecrated bread and wine, popular piety reacted with a burning desire to see the host, to contemplate with their own eyes what their hearts believed. It was this desire that led Bishop Odo of Sully to decree that the host be elevated immediately after the consecration, so that it could be seen and adored by all the faithful present.

But throughout history, a movement called Jansenism distorted this practice and began teaching that the faithful should keep their heads bowed during the elevation, considering themselves unworthy to behold the Most Blessed Sacrament. Pope John Paul II, in his encyclical Ecclesia de Eucharistia, described how his gaze would rest upon the host and the chalice during Mass, contemplating the drama of Golgotha represented live upon the altar.
