This is a Story of the 39M Csaba armoured car and the soldiers rode them to battle. They were given a task they could not complete and that gave this vehicle a reputation of a failed design and the soldiers were unfairly labelled as incompetent. But was the Csaba armoured car a failed design, or was the tactical implementation of the vehicle a bad choice?

But was the Csaba a failed design, or was it simply the victim of poor tactics and a war it was never meant to fight?

To understand the 39M Csaba, we have to turn the clock back few years. The Treaty of Trianon in 1920, was not just a peace treaty for Hungary, it left the nation crippled. Two-thirds of its territory and a third of its ethnic Hungarian population were stripped away. The treaty went further, imposing severe military restrictions: an army limited to 35,000 men, and a ban on modern weaponry like tanks and heavy artillery. Hungary was aiming to reclaim as much as territory as it can and in the 1930s started a secret re-armament program. In 1938 they officially launched the “Győri Program” which openly aimed to modernise their military and develop their own arms industry. While they needed modern tanks and armored vehicles, their ally, Germany refused to share its most advanced military designs. Hungary had to build its army from the ground up, and fast. The stage was set for stop-gap measures that would become an indispensable part of their military for the rest of the war.

One of the the first steps was to establish their armoured divisions, and to find the right recognisance vehicle. They agreed with Nicholas Straussler, a Hungarian engineer living in the UK, who had made a name for himself designing armored cars in Britain to design a a new car for them. Working with his home country, he developed a new vehicle based on his earlier design the Alvis AC2. The result was a vehicle the Hungarian Royal Army would officially designate as the 39M and name the "Csaba," after the youngest son of Attila the Hun.
