Old Higue: Fiery Creole Vampire

They are a type of spirit known as jumbies. Some believe that the legend of the Old Higue or Soucouyant may have originated from European vampire myths, particularly from French settlers, and later blended with the spiritual beliefs of enslaved Africans.

In the French-speaking Caribbean, particularly on islands like Guadeloupe and Martinique, as well as in Suriname, the Soucouyant, also called : "Soukougnan" or "Soukounian" and which is believed to be a human who can shed their skin and transform into a fiery, vampiric entity. These beings, often depicted as fireballs, are said to drain the life force from their victims, and their ability to take on this form is not restricted by gender or age.

Anoter term that is commonly used is "Loogaroo" , which is to describe the Old Higue and is likely derived from the French word "Loup-garou," which means werewolf. The two are often confused because they sound similar. In Haitian folklore, a similar creature is called "jé-rouges" (meaning "red eyes"), which refers to a werewolf-like entity. Interestingly, the concept of the Loogaroo also exists in the folklore of Mauritius, demonstrating the widespread influence of these mythological figures across various cultures.

Ol' Higue or Ole Haig in Guyana, Belize and Jamaica
Asema in Suriname
Hag in The Bahamas and Barbados
Soucouyant or Soucriant in Louisiana, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and elsewhere in the Caribbean
