Mastering how to shift your feet to kick is one of the most underrated skills in Kyokushin Karate. Proper footwork allows you to control distance, set up strikes, and land powerful kicks while staying balanced and ready for any response. Sometimes I like to use a front-leg kick the same way a boxer uses their jab—not necessarily to land, but to feel the opponent out. It helps gauge their reactions, measure distance, and set up bigger techniques.

I’ll often throw a light kick just to see how they respond. I’ll also use foot shifts to create the illusion of distance. By shifting my feet, it may seem like I haven’t moved, but I’ve actually closed the gap—subtly and effectively.

From there, I have options:
• I can slap the kick up to the face, usually with a step-in for timing.
• Or, I can fully commit, wrapping my shin and foot behind the head for a powerful finish.
