Описание к видео Goa Episode 3 ! Devil's Finger Cave ! Fort Aguada ! The Sinquerim Fort ! Reis Magos Fort

Fort Aguada:

Fort Aguada traces its origins to 1609 when its construction was started by the Portuguese who were ruling over the region. The construction continued for the next three years and was completed in 1612 under the supervision of Viceroy Ruy Tavara. The word Aguada means freshwater in Portuguese language and the fort derives its name from a freshwater spring located within it. It is recorded that crews of sailing ships used to replenish their stock of potable water from this spring.

Aguada Fort was built to guard and defend the Portuguese stronghold in Goa against the Maratha and Dutch invaders. Owing to its location at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Mandovi River, it became the most prized fortress for the Portuguese back in the seventeenth century.

In 1864, a four-storied lighthouse was erected within the fort’s premises. For a long time after that, the fort served as a reference point for the ships and vessels sailing in from Europe, thanks to the lighthouse. In 1976, the lighthouse was finally abandoned and it is currently closed to the public. However, there is a new lighthouse built in the fort premises, which is called the Aguada Lighthouse. Interestingly, the fort premises also houses a jail which was actively used during the administration of the 100th prime minister of Portugal, called Salazar. It is one of those few forts in India that has never been conquered by an enemy.

The Sinquerim Fort:

The Sinquerim Fort is located at a distance of 18 kms. from Panaji. The fort stands overlooking the Sinquerim beach and bisects the shoreline into two. This fort was constructed in the year 1612. The is an extension of the larger upper Aguada fort. The lower fort consists of a bastion and a section of fortified wall on both sides. During the 16th and 17th Century ships used to anchor next to the fort.

The main intention of building the fort was to guard Goa against the Dutch and the Marathas. The fort served as a reference point for vessels coming from Europe. On the right hand side of the fort lies the Taj Holiday Village resort, which is well known amongst tourists. In the distance one can see the Candolim beach and the river princess stranded amongst the waves. Between the Taj holiday resort and the lower fort lies the Sinquerim beach. One can find many tour operators here who conduct waters port activities such as jet ski rides, paragliding and dolphin tours. On the left hand side of the bastion is a fortified wall and rocky outcroppings.

Reis Magos Fort:

Reis Magos Fort Goa is located in small hilltop which creates very scenic sea landscape. Reis Magos Fort in North Goa restored 16th-century fort offers sweeping river & sea views, along with a cultural centre. Reis Magos Fort is among the popular ancient monuments in Goa. The 400-year-old fort, constructed in the year 1551.

The Reis Magos Fort, under the Goa government and enlisted under the Goa Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites, is the oldest fort in Goa. For Cultural and Heritage Centre it has been restored.

From its origin as a defence fortress to being used as a jail and later converted into a hospital, the fort has served the state since 1493. It was abandoned in 1993 and started showing signs of neglect and deterioration.
