This is AJ Styles’ first reign as WWE Champion. At Backlash 2016, Styles beat Dean Ambrose to win his first WWE Title. They met again three weeks later. Styles punched John Cena, Cena was talking to the ref, Ambrose rolled up Styles, the ref was too late and Ambrose punched Cena. Then Styles rolled up Ambrose to retain the title. At No Mercy, Styles, Cena and Ambrose met for the title. Cena hit Ambrose with a super AA, Styles hit him with a chair, hit him again and he retained the title. A week later on Smackdown, Styles defended the title against James Ellsworth. Styles started punching James until he got disqualified. At TLC, Styles met Ambrose in a TLC match. Ambrose was about to win, James pushed him off the ladder outside and Styles retained. Two weeks later, Styles faced James, where he retained easily. Next, he defended it against Baron Corbin and Dolph Ziggler. Corbin hit Dolph with the End of Days, Styles hit him with the Phenomenal Forearm and retained the title. At Royal Rumble, Styles faced Cena. Styles went for the Forearm, Cena caught him, hit him with the AA and hit him once again to win the title.
