India Jumps 14 ranks on Gender Inequality Index 2022
India’s ranking on the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) improved by one position in 2022 to 134 out of 193 countries ranked compared to 135 out of 191 countries in 2021.
On the Gender Inequality Index (GII) 2022, India has been ranked at 108 out of 193 countries with a score of 0.437.
Its rank was 122 out of 191 countries with a score of 0.490 in the GII-2021.
This shows a significant jump of 14 ranks on the GII-2022 vis-a-vis the GII-2021, the women and child development ministry said.

Indicators of HDI
In 2022, India saw improvements across all HDI indicators:
Life expectancy - Rose from 67.2 to 67.7 years
Education - Expected years of schooling reached 12.6
Gross national income (GNI) per capita - increase from USD 6,542 to USD 6,951
India demonstrated progress in reducing gender inequality

What is GII?
According to UNDP, GII is a composite metric of gender inequality using three dimensions:
Reproductive Health – Use indicators namely the maternal mortality ratio and the adolescent fertility rate.
Also uses Female reproductive health Index.
Empowerment – Measured by the share of parliamentary seats held and at least secondary attainment level by both gender.
Also uses Female and male empowerment Index.
Labour market – Measured by labour force participation rates by both gender
Also uses Female and male labour market Index.

Key Highlights:
Topped by Denmark, followed by Norway and Switzerland
India has been ranked at 108 out of 193 countries with a score of 0.437.
In 2021 India stood at rank 122 out of 191 countries
This shows a significant jump of 14 ranks on GII 2022 vis-à-vis GII 2021.
In 2014, this rank was 127, which now has become 108.
India’s neighboring nations such as Bhutan (80), Sri Lanka (90) and Maldives (76) have performed better.

For female labour participation:
Code on Social Security 2020 has the provisions for enhancement in paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 26 weeks etc.
Code on Wages 2019 – No employer shall make any discrimination on the ground of sex while recruiting any employee for the same work.
Others – Mission Poshan 2.0, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY) etc
