Academic streaming is the practice of separating students into distinct and unequal educational pathways based on perceived ability, leading to academic and non-academic course placements. A disproportionate number of students from low-income families, Black students, racialized students, Indigenous students and students with special education needs are enrolled in ‘applied’ courses and are significantly underrepresented among students who graduate and go on to pursue post-secondary education.
