As business leaders, policymakers and individuals involved in North American trade relations, we are directly impacted by the two elections in North America this year. The first of these elections, the one not being well covered in Canada, just took place on June 2nd in Mexico, one of Western Canada’s top five trading partners and a key voice as to whether, and if so, how CUSMA survives its upcoming review.

What happened during the election? What can we expect from the incoming administration of former Mexico City mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and the Morena party? How strong is the incoming administration’s mandate? How strong will the opposition be? What can we expect from the incoming administration and opposition on energy, agriculture, environmental policy, investment, and the upcoming review of the CUSMA?

Pierre Alarie is currently Regional Chair, ATCO, Latin America. He was Canada’s ambassador to the United Mexican States from 2015 to 2019. At Canada’s Foreign Ministry, Mr. Alarie served as a trade office officer with the European office, second secretary in Lagos, and first secretary in Santiago. Mr. Alarie was vice president of business development for Bombardier’s transportation group and, in 1994, vice president of business development for SNC-Lavalin International in Mexico City.

Sergio Alcocer served as Undersecretary for North America in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2015. Prior to this, he was the Undersecretary for Strategic Planning and Technology Development of the Ministry of Energy of the Mexican Government. He is currently President of the Mexican Council on Foreign Relations (COMEXI0 and a Research Professor at the Institute of Engineering of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and a Visiting Professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Antonio Garza is Counsel to White & Case in Mexico City and served as U.S. Ambassador to Mexico from 2002 through 2009. Prior to Mr. Garza’s service in Mexico, he had been elected to both statewide and local office in his native Texas and was a partner in a major Texas-based law firm. He is currently a Director to Canadian Pacific Kansas City Limited (NYSE:CP) and is Chairman of its subsidiary CPKC de Mexico, a rail-based transportation company and the first single-line rail network connecting Canada.
