Annie Ross was a trailblazing jazz vocalist, songwriter, and actress whose influence on vocal jazz remains profound. Born on July 25, 1930, in Mitcham, Surrey, England, she began performing at a young age and quickly demonstrated a rare musical talent. By age 14, she had already written a song that was recorded by Johnny Mercer and The Pied Pipers, marking the beginning of a remarkable career.

Her most iconic contribution to jazz came in 1952 with the release of “Twisted,” a witty and rhythmically complex song that set lyrics to a saxophone solo by Wardell Gray. This technique, known as vocalese—writing lyrics to instrumental solos—was still relatively new at the time, and Ross’s clever wordplay and impeccable timing helped popularize the style. “Twisted” became a jazz standard and remains one of the most celebrated examples of vocalese.

From 1957 to 1962, Ross was part of the legendary vocal trio Lambert, Hendricks & Ross, alongside Jon Hendricks and Dave Lambert. Together, they reimagined big band arrangements with intricate vocal harmonies and rapid-fire lyrics, earning international acclaim and reshaping the possibilities of jazz singing. Their album Sing a Song of Basie is considered a landmark in vocal jazz.

Beyond her musical achievements, Ross also had a successful career in film and theater, appearing in productions such as Short Cuts and performing regularly in New York jazz clubs well into her later years. She was honored as a Jazz Master by the National Endowment for the Arts in 2010, one of the highest accolades in American jazz.

Annie Ross passed away on July 21, 2020, just days before her 90th birthday. Her legacy endures not only through her recordings but also through the generations of vocalists she inspired. With her fearless creativity, sharp wit, and technical brilliance, Ross expanded the boundaries of jazz and left an indelible mark on the art form.
