The United States will levy a 10% tariff on items sold to the United States from Denmark, the United Kingdom, France, and numerous other European countries (including Norway, Sweden, Germany, the Netherlands, and Finland), starting on February 1. President Donald Trump made this announcement on Truth Social. If an agreement is not struck for the "full and comprehensive purchase" of Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, the rate will increase to 25% on June 1. Citing concerns from China and Russia in the Arctic, Trump defended the action as necessary for US national security. European officials have strongly denounced the news, calling it "unacceptable" and a danger to NATO unity. EU leaders warned of a "dangerous downward spiral" in transatlantic relations as thousands of people protested against US pressure in Greenland and Denmark.
