In this video, Aaswath, my brother disciple of Somashekara Shivacarya teaches us on how to prepare the darbha ring or pavitram.

Number of Darbha strands to be used:
(1) four strands if it is parartha - for cosmic purpose | non- personal
(2) three strands if it is for aparakaaryam ( done for ancestors )
(3) two strands if it is done for personal reason ( atmartha )

Make sure the darbhas are soaked well in water. The length of darbha used must be of two hasta ( one hasta is the length between the tip of index finger and thumb which are fully extended. You can break the darbha in a manner such that it is of two hasta long
