After the death of Guthix and the fall of his edicts, it was only a matter of time before the Gods returned to Gielinor and continued their wars on the world. Zamorak was the first to take action. And once again set foot on Gielinor nearby the town of Lumbridge.

Zamorak instantly started to harvest the nearby Divine tears, remnants of Guthix' power, to increase his own, showing no regard to the nearby mortals. He would have continued if Saradomin didn't appear on the scene to put a stop to Zamoraks actions. However, the resulting battle between the two gods caused a massive explosion which swept away the entire forest, vastly damaged the town of Lumbridge and created a huge crater. The gods quickly summoned their followers, and when both armies clashed in the crater, the first battle between gods since the third age begun.

After 10 weeks of battle, Saradomin was able to harvest enough Divine tears to overcome his nemesis. Zamorak managed to flee at the brink of time, only to plan his next moves of war. The gods would stop at nothing to win their war for Gielinor, even if it resulted in the utter destruction of the world itself.

The battle of Lumbridge was the first ever World event to be played in the game. Released as the opening of the Runescape 3 update, the event lasted 10 weeks before finally ending. During the event, players could side with their favoured god, battlling against the forces of the other and collecting Divine tears scattered across the crater. At the end of the event, the god with the most divine tears would win the battle, changing the future of Gielinor.
