Introduction to Binary Number System
Hello and Welcome Wisdomers.

Being the first video of this course we will start our discussion with an Introduction to Binary Number System.

The word Binary in the title Binary Number System itself is stating two.

What does two represents in the Binary Number System?
If we take any operation on a computer, it happens by using two symbols "0" and "1".

Whatever the operations we do on a computer like adding two numbers on a computer, seeing an image, watching a video on a computer, all these operations are done by using the combinations of the symbols "0" and "1".

As we are having two symbols we also call this as Base-2 Number System.

Before going deep into the concepts of Binary Number System, lets recap our knowledge on Decimal Number System.

Decimal Number System
As we are used to concept of Decimal Number System. The Decimal Number System consists of 10 different symbols.

The 10 different symbols are "0", "1", "2", "3", "4", "5", "6", "7", "8", "9".

You consider any decimal number it have the combinations of these numbers only.

As we are having 10 different symbols, this number system is also called as Base-10 Number System.

For example we have a decimal number 234. By seeing this number what we call it.

Means will we call it two three four or will we say it as Two Hundred and Thirty Four.

We always sense it as Two Hundred and Thirty Four only.

This means that every number has a value.

How do we get that value?

We get the value of a given number by using the position of the number and its value.

For example consider the number 234.

The 4 in the given decimal number is in 1's position and the value for the number is obtained by the product of 4*10 power 0, which becomes 4.

The 3 in the given decimal number is in 10's position and the value for the number is obtained by the product of 3*10 power 1, which becomes 30.

The 2 in the given decimal number is in 100's position and the value for the number is obtained by the product of 2*10 power 2, which becomes 200.

If we sum up all these number it will be 200 + 30 + 4 = 234 (Two Hundred and Thirty Four).

As we are familiar with this construct of Decimal Number System we will now discuss about Binary Number System.

Binary Number System
Now lets consider the Decimal number 2, how the decimal number 2 is represented in Binary Number System?

It is represent as "10" - Decimal Equivalent of "2".

How can we say that 10 in Binary is representing 2 in Decimal?

It is similar to that of position of digit (bit) in the given binary number.

We obtain the value for the digit (bit) we multiply the bit with the powers of 2.

The 0 in the given binary number is in 1's position and the value for the number is obtained by the product of 0*2 power 0, which becomes 0.

The 1 in the given binary number is in 10's position and the value for the number is obtained by the product of 1*2 power 1, which becomes 2.

If we sum up all these number it will be 2 + 0 = 2.

With this basic understanding of the Binary Number System we will move on to our next lesson to discuss the concept of Binary to Decimal and Decimal to Binary Conversion.
