"What I wanted to do this time is a collection that is inspired from different things. So, I started to look at paintings and I found a lot of nice paintings from Whistler where I like a lot the very long slender silhouette combined with volumes and Whistler also had a period where he was strongly influenced by Japan and Japan Kimono's and drawings. So, I liked a lot the combination of those two things. So, really, that kind of late Victorian early Edwardian silhouette combined with Japanese influence."

ARTISTIC CREATIONS FROM VAN NOTEN

The Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts (Fine Arts School) on the French capital's Left Bank provided an an ideal setting for Dries Van Noten's catwalk inspired by the history of art.

The Belgium designer, inspired by the 19th century 'arts-for-art sake' painter James McNeill Whistler, one of the first westerners to be influenced by the artistic tradition of Japan, and the cut of Van Noten's new highly embroidered designs owed something to the kimono and samurai pants

Romantic sandy hues dominated at the start, then red crept in on the lapels of a jacket, before rich patterns mixed with fragile pink and lime green took over. A shimmering orange melted into cream and back to orange again on a cropped jacket and skirt, and finally the black appeared.
