過去七佛，離我們時間最近的七位佛，釋迦牟尼佛（Śākyamuni）是最後一位，俗名悉達多，釋迦牟尼佛之前的六位佛是毗婆屍佛（Vipaśyin）、屍棄佛（Śikhin）、毗舍浮佛（Viśvabhu）、拘留孫佛（Krakucchanda）、拘那含牟尼佛（Kanakamuni）、迦葉佛（Kaśyapa）。《長阿含經•大本經》提到過去七佛出現的因緣。據佛經所載，前三佛為過去莊嚴劫千佛的三佛，後四佛為現在賢劫千佛的四佛。過去莊嚴劫、現在賢劫、未來星宿劫三劫之中，皆有千佛。

According to the Buddhist scriptures, the first three Buddhas are the three Buddhas of the thousand Buddhas of the solemn eons in the past, and the last four Buddhas are the four Buddhas of the thousand Buddhas of the present virtuous eons. There are thousands of Buddhas in the three kalpas of the past solemn kalpa, the present virtuous kalpa, and the future star kalpa.
