This Video is about breaking news : On November 21, 2025, Prema Wangjom Thongdok, an Indian professional living in London, faced an unexpected and distressing situation while transiting through Shanghai Pudong International Airport en route to Japan.
Originally from the town of Rupa in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district, Thongdok has been based in the United Kingdom for over 14 years, where she works as a senior regulatory consultant in the financial sector. Like many from her state, she holds an ordinary Indian passport that lists Arunachal Pradesh as her place of birth.
During what was supposed to be a routine three-hour layover on a China Eastern Airlines flight, immigration officers at the transit security checkpoint noticed her birthplace. According to her account, a female officer declared her Indian passport “invalid,” confiscated it, and informed her that Arunachal Pradesh belongs to China, not India. Over the next several hours, multiple staff members reportedly repeated the claim that the state (which Beijing refers to as “South Tibet”) is Chinese territory and even suggested she should apply for a Chinese passport instead.
Thongdok was detained in a holding area for approximately 18 hours. She says she was initially denied food, prevented from contacting family, and pressured to buy an immediate ticket out of the country. Unable to reach Indian authorities directly because of restricted phone access, she managed to alert a friend in the UK, who contacted the Indian Consulate in Shanghai. Consulate officials promptly arrived at the airport, provided assistance, and secured her release onto a later flight to Japan.
Following the incident, Thongdok wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and other senior leaders, describing the treatment as a direct affront to India’s sovereignty and the dignity of Arunachal Pradesh residents. She called for diplomatic accountability, compensation, and measures to prevent similar experiences for other Indian citizens from the state.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs responded swiftly, issuing formal protests in both New Delhi and Beijing. Officials described the detention as unacceptable and reiterated that Arunachal Pradesh is an integral, inalienable part of India. They also noted that such actions contravene international civil aviation agreements governing transit passengers.
The episode has renewed attention on the long-standing territorial disagreement between India and China over Arunachal Pradesh, a sensitive issue that periodically affects ordinary citizens. Many in India have praised Thongdok for speaking out and commended the consulate’s rapid intervention, while discussions continue about the risks Indian travelers—especially those from border states—may face when transiting through Chinese airports.
