Here is my arrangement of 'The Shadow Of Your Smile'. I had three ideas behind this arrangement:
1) Emphasize the Percussion, 'key click' and key click 'bounce' sound.
2) Play the whole bass line and intro/ending chords in bossa nova style.
3) Play the solo parts with a bluesy flavour.

Please, read my PS in the last paragraph about YouTube audio quality.

Intro: I start with the left hand establishing the bass rhythm for the song. Then I add the right hand rhythm and we have a little bossa nova thing going :-)

Part 1: The melody.

Part 2: The melody one octave up.

Part 3: The first solo part.
I use a variation of the last phrase of the melody as a lead-in for the solo. The solo is built upon repetitions with variations of phrases/riffs. After some time I play a 'one-note-riff' on beat and off-beat. The solo speeds up and then ends with the same phrase as it begun.

Part 4: The melody. Same as Part 2.

Long Outro: The second solo part. Same way of building up the solo as in the first solo part. Repetitions with variations/embellishments. In the later parts I'm using phrases of quarter note triplets. I use a variation of the last phrase of the melody as a 'lead-out' of the solo.

Ending 1: Chords Part 1 followed by Chords Part 2. Embellished with palm glissandos.
Ending 2: An accelerating 'machine gun' tremolo together with a pedal tone.
Final ending with the first phrase from the melody, but in a different key this time.

A would like to jot down a few words about the solo sound.

I'm emphasizing the Percussion sound to the extreme. As a matter of fact, I'm only using drawbar 4 (second harmonic) one notch out (position 1). The rest of the sound comes from the Percussion effect. After that the Reverb play it's part in keeping the sound alive for a while.

The Percussion effect is also set to the second harmonic (that is one octave higher than the pressed down key).

This sound is low in volume.

To get a balanced sound between the solo (upper manual) and the lower manual and the bass, I have to use low volume for the lower manual and for the bass line.

I also had to amplify the output a lot.

Another effect of this solo sound setting comes from the peculiar fact that the Hammond Percussion effect only kicks in for the first pressed down key, if more keys are pressed down while the first key is still down. As I only have drawbar 4 one notch out this means that I have to play every note clearly separated from the next one. Otherwise only the first note of the phrase would be heard (except for the little sound the drawbar 4 makes). During fast parts of the solo it is easy to hear that the Percussion now and then don't kick in for every note.

The Hammond B-3 and also this Nord C1 clonewheel has a very fast trigger keyboard action (the sound comes when the key is pressed down just a fraction of an inch/a few millimeters), and the keyboard is also very springy (the springiness means that it is possible to play the 'machine gun' tremolo I play in the ending).

My main use of the fast trigger action and the springiness in this song is that I now and then during the solo parts press down a key and then let the finger slide over the edge of the key while keeping the down pressure on the key (opposite of the normal way of just lifting the finger from the key). Because of the springiness the key will bounce up and down, and because of the fast trigger action in combination with the key click sound this will produce new sounds.

I use this 'press-down-and-slide-to-release' technique mostly with my right thumb in this song.

The organ is a Clavia Nord C1 - a Hammond B-3 clonewheel organ.

Upper 00 0100 000. Percussion On, Soft, Fast, Second. No Chorus.
Lower 33 1400 000. No Chorus/Vibrato.
Bass lower manual 40.
Leslie simulator Slow position.
Equalizer not used.
Overdrive not used.
Reverb Hall, Soft, 50%.
Tonewheel mode Vintage 2 (high level of tonewheel crosstalk and cable leakage artefacts).

The sound is recorded line out from the organ. No additional external effects, external amplifiers or speakers are used.

PS. Unfortunately, YouTube seem to have changed their audio encoding process very recently. The result is that YouTube now creates a lot of distortion in the audio! YouTube have a two-step encoding process of the video after the upload. After the first fast encoding step, the audio is excellent! But the video is not so crisp. After the next slower step, the video quality is quite improved, but from now on the audio is filled with distortion. If anyone knows how to avoid YouTube's destroying of the audio, please, send me a message.
