"VALENTINE" (VIDEO)
Jessa and Kelly arrive to Aaron's house just as they would for any other band practice. While settling in, they hear a knock at the door. Surprised to find no one on the other side, Aaron notices a folded stack of black fabric, accompanied by a note with an all too familiar J. Graves symbol. The bandmates gather round to read the note. "YOU HAVE BEEN INVITED TO THE FORTRESS OF FUN. SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO CONTINUE, THIS WILL BE YOUR GREATEST ADVENTURE." Curious and confused, the band heads back to the basement to resume their rehearsal. Descending the basement staircase, the group notices a chest has appeared in the middle of their practice space. Untying a white string, the folded black cloth produces 3 black jumpsuits marked yet again with the band's symbol. Climbing into the jumpsuits, their armor, readying themselves for what might lie ahead, they reluctantly accept their invitation.
Upon arrival to the FORTRESS OF FUN, it's clear they have been transported through the perfectly placed chest - a portal to what might be a different dimension. Wherever they are, they certainly aren't in Portland anymore. Testing the chest, they close it to discover their way back to the basement is now uncertain and a new black envelope lays in the bottom of the chest. "TO WIN IS TO CHOOSE. WEAR THE CHAINMAIL OR LOSE." Jessa pulls out the very chainmail described in the note. Feeling its weight and eerie power, they continue to discover items in the chest. A net, a broadsword, a bow - all passed around the baffled and hesitant trio. They return the items to the chest and must choose the bearer of the chainmail.
CHOICE #1
WHO WILL WEAR THE CHAINMAIL?
"VALENTINE" (SONG)
It was Valentine’s day and a week prior I had ended a slowly dying, tumultuous relationship that left me feeling more liberated than mournful - I was angry, resentful, and free. I tend to process and understand my experience through my songwriting. I often have no idea what I’m writing about until after the song is complete and I’m able to sit with the composition to get a more comprehensive understanding. This song is written as a mirror. I have a habit of putting others’ needs before my own, making sacrifices, and taking responsibility that isn’t mine. "Valentine" explores that offering, that sacrifice, and the realization of friction, eyes opening to choice - I don’t have to do this anymore. There are parallels in this song - internal bargaining and justification, to external loss and the fear of losing. When the thing you hold is threatened, what would you say to keep it?
