A loud explosion jolted the residents of Yilan’s Yuanshan Township awake just before dawn on Tuesday. They ran outside to find that a transformer had caught fire, and was sending a downpour of sparks down on the street. The blast caused 300 households to lose power, including a school which had to open the gates and ring the bell manually until power was restored at 9:30 in the morning.

Just before dawn, locals rushed outside after hearing a loud explosion, to find the transformer box on fire, blasting sparks down like a rain of fire.

Flames kept cascading down making for a terrifying sight. Locals immediately called the police.

Yuanshan resident Mr. Liao heard about three explosions. The power was unstable shortly after, turning on and off, before a full-on blackout affecting 300 households in the alley. Electricity was restored at 9:30, but it wasn’t early enough for Tongle Primary School, which had to open its electric school gate manually.

Our bells are also electronic, so we switched to a hand-rung bell. We have back-up measures in place in case things like these happen.

Taipower rushed to begin emergency repairs. The fire left charred and melted remains on the ground. It is thought the fire started after the load switch caught fire.

We replaced everything and now we’re ready to restore power.

Fortunately, the malfunction was detected and reported fast, so the fire didn’t spread or cause any injuries. And thanks to the swift repairs, daily life is back to normal in Yuanshan.
