Born in Troy, Alabama, John Lewis grew up in a racially segregated America and witnessed firsthand the injustices faced by African Americans.

John Lewis became involved in the civil rights movement during college, and played a significant role in the fight for racial equality. He was one of the ‘Big Six’ leaders of the civil rights movement, which included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and was instrumental in organizing pivotal events such as the March on Washington in 1963.

On March 7, 1965, Lewis led a group of peaceful protesters attempting to cross the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, during what became known as ‘Bloody Sunday.’ State troopers brutally attacked the marchers, including Lewis, leaving him with a fractured skull. The event ultimately led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

In 1986, John Lewis was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, representing Georgia's 5th congressional district. He served in Congress for over three decades, advocating for civil rights, social justice, and equality.

John Lewis's passing on July 17, 2020, was met with an outpouring of grief and recognition of his immense contributions to the civil rights movement and the advancement of human rights. His legacy lives on, inspiring others to continue the fight for a more just and equitable society.
