Siberian Crane | From Russia with Love

This breathtaking bird is known for
its awe-inspiring migration
and unparalleled elegance.

This is the Siberian Crane.

Also known as the Siberian White Crane or Snow Crane,
Populations of these birds range from Yakutia in arctic Russia
to western Siberia.

The population in the east breeds in northeast Siberia
and migrates to their wintering grounds
in China’s Poyang Lake in the mid Yangtze RIver Basin.

That’s roughly 5,000 kilometers during which
they even have to cross the Himalayas.

They are aquatic birds,
and use the wetlands for feeding, roosting and nesting.
What makes them different from other species
is their serrated bills which enable them
to easily feed on underground roots.

Sadly, they are critically endangered.
Changes brought by China’s Three Gorges Dam
might alter their habitat putting heavy pressure on their species.
