(5 Oct 2017) Supplies of food and water were hand delivered Thursday by members of the police to the southeastern coastal town of Guayama, an area devastated by Hurricane Maria over two weeks ago.
Although only 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of the capital, San Juan, the area was designated by the government of Puerto Rico and emergency aid managers as one of the 50 areas most wanting for the supplies.
Governor Ricardo Rossello said aid being delivered was being coordinated by the US Department of Defense, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in Puerto Rico.
Officials say 93 percent of the island still lacks electricity and water service has been restored to about half of customers across the island, according to the governor.
Visiting the island territory earlier this week, President Donald Trump pledged an all-out effort to help the island.
