We almost put ourselves in a diabetic coma yesterday by going to five different shave ice restaurants to film a video about the best shave ice in West Hawaii.

In the video we mispronounced Li hing mui and also said Li hing mui was Japanese. Sorry! Li hing mui known as huamei in mainland China, is salty dried Chinese plum.

Scandi (Scandinavian Shave Ice) in the heart of downtown has the most affordable shave ice at $5. Lots of syrups to choose from, including sugar free. I had strawberry yogurt with Ube, Tigers Blood and MaiTai syrups with the ice encasing the yogurt. Exotic and didn’t melt as fast as the others.

Ululani at the King Kam hotel serves shave ice with alcohol! Flip a little local made Kuleana Rum in the ice for a slushy Mai tai.

Clover and Mug in Keauhou Shopping Center features Binsoo-instead of water to make the ice, they blend milk, water and condensed milk and it’s like eating cream snow. So good! We got the popular mango bowl. (And the owner was kind enough to donate gift cards for my silent auction for Arc of Kona)

Original Big Island Shave Ice Co at the Kings Shops in Waikoloa Resort has the story with the dessert. The woman who brought shave ice to our island created her own tropical recipes back in the 50’s and even had a shave ice truck at Kahaluu Beach park for twenty years. I had the Chantilly with chocolate ice and a coconut Carmel drizzle..if you love Chantilly cake-this is Ono! Eric had a HoloHolo with Ube ice cream and coconut shave ice.
Lord-it was amazingly tasty and seriously sugary day. Taking it for the team to help others try this local treat!
