You don't remember opening the window. Maybe you never closed it. All you know is that the spring breeze is already inside the room when you open your eyes, brushing your bare arms and carrying something floral and green and almost unbearably soft across your face. Cherry blossoms, probably. They're scattered on the windowsill like someone left them there on purpose.

The french garden outside is doing that thing it does every year around this time — looking so impossibly beautiful it almost makes you angry, because no one is here to see it but you and the swan drifting across the pond in slow, arrogant circles. The water catches the early light and sends gentle ripples across itself for no reason at all, just because the breeze told it to. You watch them reach the grassy bank and disappear.

You should probably get up. Make coffee. Open that book sitting on the table beside you, the one you keep meaning to finish. But your body has other plans, apparently, because your legs are tucked beneath you in this chair by the open window and they're not going anywhere. Not while the birds are singing like that — not the loud, aggressive dawn thing, but the late spring morning kind of birdsong, the one that sounds like they're just talking to each other about nothing important. Like gossip, but prettier.

So you stay.

The french countryside stretches out beyond the pond, all green lawn and flowering trees and that old manor house with the sage-colored shutters that always looks like it belongs in someone else's life. The cherry blossom branches hang low enough to frame your view from the window, petals dropping every time the gentle spring breeze picks up. Some land on the water. Some land on your journal. You don't brush them off.

There's no music playing. You forgot to put something on, and now the silence has filled itself with things you wouldn't have heard otherwise — the soft lapping of pond water against the bank, the breeze moving through leaves with that papery spring rustle, a bird somewhere close doing a three-note thing over and over like it's learning a song. These are the sounds your soul actually needed this morning, you realize. Not a playlist. Not someone else's words. Just this. Gentle water. Sweet birdsong. Wind that smells like it passed through a garden on its way to find you.

The sun climbs a little higher. The light on the pond shifts from silver to gold. The swan has settled near the far bank, tucked into itself and perfectly still, like it's meditating or just deeply unimpressed by everything. You pick up your tea — lukewarm now, but you don't care — and you think about how there's a specific kind of peace that only exists on a spring morning when you have nowhere to be. It's the kind that makes your chest ache, but in a good way. In a your-soul-is-being-reborn way. In a way that makes you want to cry and laugh and do absolutely nothing, all at the same time.

The birds keep singing. The gentle ripples keep catching the light. The breeze keeps arriving through your open window like a guest who doesn't need to knock. And you stay right here in this serene french garden morning, doing the bravest thing you've done all week — which is nothing at all.
